HYDROPONICS AND ROLE OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE

WHAT IS HYDROPONICS?

Hydroponics is the cultivation of plants without using soil. Hydroponic flowers, herbs, and vegetables are planted in inert growing media and supplied with nutrient-rich solutions, oxygen, and water. This system fosters rapid growth, stronger yields, and superior quality. When a plant is grown in soil, its roots are perpetually searching for the necessary nutrition to support the plant. If a plant’s root system is exposed directly to water and nutrition, the plant does not have to exert any energy in sustaining itself. The energy the roots would have expended acquiring food and water can be redirected into the plant’s maturation. As a result, leaf growth flourishes as does the blooming of fruits and flowers.

WHY IS HYDROGEN PEROXIDE A SIGNIFICANT TOOL IN HYDROPONICS?

  • Anti-Microbial Action
  • Effective sterilizer of your growing medium and growing environment as it breaks down into water and oxygen after use.
  • Can increase germination rates
  • Encourages more vigorous vegetative growth
  • Adds oxygen to your reservoir, killing off harmful bacteria
  • Increases nutrient uptake by your plants’ roots
  • Eliminates chlorine in water quicker (great if you are using tap water in your garden)
  • Promotes root health
  • Improves oxygen content in water

HOW PEROXIDE WORKS IN A HYDROPONIC SYSTEM?

Generally, hydrogen peroxide is added in small quantities to the central reservoir in your hydroponic system. Hydrogen Peroxide solutions have characteristics that resemble rainwater. Rainwater is always the best water source to ensure the healthy and flourishing growth of plants. To ensure this healthy growth throughout the year, use Hydrogen Peroxide solution as your go-to tool! Once added, here is how it works, in simple words:

1. The molecules break down slowly into the water and a single Oxygen atom, a free radical.

2. This free radical is a very volatile agent, which can react in multiple ways.

3. If it comes into contact with an organic cell, like a bacteria or virus, it damages and destroys it.

4. If it comes in contact with another oxygen atom, it forms an O2 molecule.

5. This molecule is healthy essential for the plant roots.

6. The whole peroxide molecule also reacts with any free chlorine in the water to form O2 and hydrogen chloride.

WHICH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE IS TO BE USED?

Hydrogen Peroxide is easily available in various concentrations but we cannot use ordinary Hydrogen peroxide-containing stabilizers for hydroponics as some of these stabilizers are extremely toxic. We must ensure that the Hydrogen peroxide we use is FOOD GRADE.

The term “food-grade hydrogen peroxide” is defined as being free from dangerous chemicals and toxic materials. Food-grade hydrogen peroxide does not contain any added chemicals, stabilizers and or toxins.
